Yasawiyyah and Modern Society: Details of the International Symposium

As reported, an international symposium titled “THE LEGACY OF YASAWI IN THE DIALOGUE OF TIMES AND CULTURIES HUMANISTIC LANDMARKS AND CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES” was held in Turkistan city, Republic of Kazakhstan.

The symposium was organized with the aim of studying and widely promoting the legacy of Hazrat Sultan, integrating his wisdom and principles into the education system, and coordinating the research of local and foreign scholars in this field. Over fifty scholars from about ten countries presented their reports at the event.

At the symposium, Mekhrojiddin Amonov, head of a department at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center and Doctor of Philosophy in History, delivered a lecture within the section “Studying Yasawi’s Scientific Heritage: Problems and Prospects” on the topic “The Yasawiyyah Tariqa: Murshid, Murid, Silsila.”

The scholar touched upon the history of the Yasawiyyah tariqa and its modern significance, as well as important issues related to the scientific study of Hazrat Sultan’s spiritual heritage.

The social and spiritual importance of the tariqa was especially emphasized during the lecture. According to him, Yasawiyyah ensured dialogue between various cultures and peoples throughout centuries, and its study and promotion remain highly relevant today. Yasawiyyah, particularly with its principles focused on humanism, noble morality and spiritual development, serves as a model for spiritual governance and education systems in modern society.

M. Amonov provided an analytical discussion of the main principles of Yasawiyyah — murshid (spiritual guide), murid (disciple), and silsila (spiritual chain). He stressed that these principles allow not only individual spiritual growth but also purification of society and strengthening of social stability. Therefore, the scientific and spiritual heritage of Yasawiyyah holds great importance.

It was noted that Yasawiyyah emerged as the first classical tariqa in Mawarannahr. Under the guidance of Ahmad Yasawi, it developed in Turkistan and expanded in major cities such as Tashkent, Khorezm, Bukhara and Samarkand. The tariqa has various branches and spiritual lineages that spread to different cities. In particular, the Azizon and Iqoniyyah branches continued their development in Samarkand.

The speaker shared information about the tariqa’s different generations and lineages, each historically significant and playing an important role in ensuring spiritual perfection. His analysis was met with great interest by the symposium participants.

Within the symposium framework, historical sources related to the study of Yasawi heritage, preparation of new publications, philological research, the place of Yasawi heritage in material and spiritual culture, and relevant social issues of today were also discussed.

The event was an important step aimed at emphasizing the social and spiritual significance of the Yasawiyyah tariqa, its role in modern society and expanding opportunities for its scientific study.
