An international seminar on manuscript studies has begun

Today, April 29, a seminar-training titled “Elements of Codicology of Central Asian Manuscripts” commenced at the Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center, in cooperation with the Samarkand State Museum-Reserve under the Cultural Heritage Agency.

The event was attended by Dr. Maria Eftimiou from the Collège de France, Professor Francis Richard from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), researchers of the Center, recipients of the Imam Bukhari International Scholarship, local scholars, researchers and manuscript restorers.

At the opening ceremony, the Director of the Center welcomed the participants and emphasized that the seminar would provide an opportunity to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals working in the field of manuscript preservation and research, as well as serve as a platform for mutual exchange of experience.

In the main part of the first day, Professor Francis Richard and Dr. Maria Eftimiou delivered lectures on the subject. They provided detailed information about the collections of sources created in Central Asia from the emergence of unique manuscript traditions up to the introduction of technologies such as lithography and printing. The scholars discussed the preservation of manuscript copies, types of paper used, inks and pigments, page layout and decorative elements. They also focused on keywords used in manuscripts, page markers, covers and colophons.

In the second half of the day, local experts in the field shared their personal work experiences and information about the scientific institutions they represent.

It is worth noting that the foreign researchers possess significant scholarly expertise in the field of codicology, which studies manuscripts as archaeological objects. The aspects they emphasize in their research are of great importance and serve to improve activities in this field within our country.

The seminar will continue tomorrow.
