Uzbekistan: a land multifarious geniuses. ABDULLAH AS-SUBAZMUNI (Part 2)

Abdullah as-Subazmuni’s teachers and students

There were a number of teachers and students (followers) of Abdullah as-Subazmuni. In his famous book “Kashf al-asar”, he made a number of citations from the most famous roviys, i.e. experts, and well-known scientists of his time who lived in the area stretching from our countiy up’to Egypt. Among them, there were some of his estimated teachers and contemporaries. They were the most acknowledged and appreciated masters and scholars of different fields of the Islamic sciences such as hadith, law, style, kalam, etc. As-Subazmuni was taught not only by the scholars of the Hanafian order but also by the leading specialists of other orders of Islam. In his book “Kashf al-asar” he mentioned 321 names of his respected teachers and masters from whom he had cited Hadiths. The following list includes some of these names.

  1. Abu Kasir Sayf ibn Hafs az-Zahid az-Zamini as-oamarqan di (died in 297/909);
  2. Abu Abd ar-Rahman Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Surayj ibn Hijr ibn al-Fadl ibn Tahman ash-Shaybani al-Bukhari (died in 307/919);
  3. Abu Hafs Ahmad ibn Hatam ibn Hammad ibn Abd ar-Rahman as-Sikijkasi al-Bukhari (died in 315/927);
  4. Abu Salih Khalaf ibn Amir ibn Sa’id al-Hamadani al-Bukhari (died in 282/895);
  5. Abu Sa’id Khalaf ibn Sulayman ibn Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ad-Dirizdahi an-Nasafi (died in 300/912);

Among his followers and students, we can see the following names:

  1. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Fadl al-Kamari (301/913 -381/991);
  2. Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husain ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Rustam ibn Jakra ibn Maftam ibn Janinam al-Kalabazi al-Hafiz (died in 398/1008);
  3. Abu Ibrahim Is’haq ibn Muhammad ibn Hamdan ibn Muhammad ibn Nuh al-Muhallabi al-Khatib (died in 395/1005), etc.

Among his students and followers, Ibn Fadl made a great contribution to the spread of law in Maveraunnahr.

We do not have enough information at our disposal about his father. In his books, he cited some Hadiths from his father Muhammad ibn Ya’qub and from his uncle Jibri’il ibn Ya’qub. The fact that he provided legends from his father and uncle in his book “Kashf al-asar” allows us to make a conclusion that they were also well-known figures in the field of Hadiths and representatives of the Hanafian order, and at the same time, they were Abdullah as-Subazmuni’s first teachers. It is possible to find some information about his teachers and students in the books “Al-ansab” by as-Sam’ani, “Al-Javahir al-muziyya” by al-Qurashi and “Favaid al-bahiya” by al-Laknavi. The fame of al-Pazdavi, Burhan ad-din al-Marghinani, etc. are closely connected with the name of Abdullah as-Subazmuni.

The works written by Abdullah as-Subazmuni

Although Abdullah as-Subazmuni mentioned in his book “Shaza-rat az-zahab” that he had written some more books, we have information about the only book he left us. It is “Kashf al-asar fi manaqib Abu Hanifa” (Discovery of the Work by Abu Hanifa). This book contains more than 4000 legends most of which are Hadiths. Besides, the reader may find in it legal permissions to definite acts for Muslims in the framework of the Islamic rules and laws. Most of these permissions were given by Abu Hanifa and his followers such as Muhammad ash-Shaybani and Abu Yusuf.

“Kashf al-asar” was written in the style called “musnad” where the experts are classified it in accord with the cities they came from or were born. The work was compiled relying on the information of the roviys who had met Abu Hanifa and cited from him. The book also contains legends cited from the roviys of Samarkand, Bukhara, Nasaf, Shash and other cities. The reader of the book may find information concerning more than a hundred and thirty roviys born in our country. This information cannot be found in other historical sources.

In conclusion, we may frankly say that Abdullah as-Subazmuni was a great scholar and lawyer who made a worthy contribution to the formation and development of the science of law in Maveraunnahr.
