Asep Saepudin Jahar – Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta
The territory of Uzbekistan has long been recognized as one of the world’s historical centers of science, enlightenment, and culture. It has held a prominent position in the Islamic world since ancient times. This land is the birthplace of great scholars and thinkers such as Imam al-Bukhari, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), al-Khwarizmi, and Imam al-Maturidi.
The introduction and deep-rooted establishment of Islam in Indonesia are closely linked to the invaluable contributions of scholars from the land of Samarkand. Among them, Malik Ibrahim Samarkandi occupies a particularly esteemed place. Today, his tomb is regarded as a revered pilgrimage site, and he is recognized as one of the founding figures of the “Wali Songo” — the Nine Saints — who played a pivotal role in spreading Islam across the Indonesian archipelago. In honor of his enduring legacy, a university named after him — Malik Ibrahim Samarkandi University — has been established in the Malang region of Indonesia.
The scientific-practical conference organized at our university is aimed at strengthening educational cooperation between our countries, developing joint projects focused on the study and promotion of Imam al-Bukhari’s legacy, and establishing a platform for inter-university dialogue.
