When we speak of Uzbekistan, what comes to mind are the names of great scholars such as Ibn Sina—known in the West as Avicenna, the author of The Canon of Medicine; Al-Khwarizmi, the founder of algebra; and Imam al-Bukhari, the “Sultan of Hadith Science”—along with many other eminent scholars, theologians, and philosophers. The people of Indonesia regard Uzbekistan as a sacred land. Visiting the mausoleum of Imam al-Bukhari is a cherished aspiration for every Indonesian Muslim.
The light of knowledge emerged from Transoxiana. It was from that region that the radiance of learning spread. Today, Uzbekistan is recognized as a country that has made an extraordinary contribution to the development of global Islamic civilization.
